Alastair Sawday's review on le Palais Briau [read more...]
A glorious Palladian house perched high on the hillside overlooking the Loire valley. Built in the 1850s by François Briau, an early industrialist who made his fortune building railways, the house is palatial, lovingly restored and saved from commercial modernisation by the present owners (...). Bedrooms are light and large with separate dressing-rooms; all have magnificent views on the park or Abbey (...). Bathrooms are sumptuous and Italian-tiled. The grounds too are fabulous; large areas are completely wild and overgrown and contain the remains of a vast orangerie; herons return to nest every year. Breathtaking.
